British and American Cultural Landmarks is an innovative approach to introducing Japanese students with a higher level of English proficiency to selected topics of comparison between the two cultures. Each unit presents the same aspect of culture in both countries, where it is epitomized by an established icon of the built environment. Students are exposed to key historical and geographical features specific to each landmark, thus gaining a more rounded appreciation of the forces that have shaped these cultures. Each of the six thematic units is then subdivided by country – the UK and the USA – giving a total of 12 lessons. This novel organization of a textbook’s material allows for creative flexibility in teaching it, according to preference, either by theme or by country. The four skills are represented in each lesson, always starting with an original method of listening that hones students’ aural comprehension.
