Speaking of Intercultural Communication

Speaking of Intercultural Communication offers a fresh approach to addressing culture and how it affects our perceptions, thoughts, feelings and communication styles. The text was written with the belief that one student “Ah-hah!” moment is worth two “Uh-huh’s.” Each unit has a short reading passage followed by related exercises and activities, including short case studies and fun cartoons dealing with cultural differences. Targeted at students with low-intermediate to higher-level English proficiencies, the text is packed with illustrations, pictures, surveys, charts, group exercises and pair-work activities designed to assure student motivation and engagement all through the class. The units provide a basic but thought-provoking understanding of intercultural communication, including subjects such as nonverbal communication, culture, cultural influences on perception and values, stereotypes, culture shock, Japanese culture and culture change. Throughout the text, students are encouraged to share their experiences, give their opinions and do presentations on culture-related topics.
